HOW TO MIX AND MATCH DENIM AND TIES
“How do I incorporate denim in a more formal direction in my wardrobe?”
We guess that’s a question that you have thought of once or twice. But really, it’s not that difficult. Denim is an informal winner in the formal part of any mans wardrobe. Well, forget about that Canadian tuxedo, off course. But make sure not to underestimate the power of denim shirts, jeans or even the denim jackets.
We have made 3 suggestions for you on how to style denim with more formal stuff from your wardrobe like ties, blazers and pocket squares.
If we should pick one denim item as our favorite, our favorite would undoubtedly be the jeans. They are comfortable to wear, they are easy to dress up and they are a perfect, rough contrast to the more formal wardrobe, which consists of blazers, ties and shirts.
When we wear jeans, we usually mix ’em with all kind of blazers. From the dressy ones to the unconstructed ones. But as you can see on the look below, it’s actually also possible to wear a workwear jacket combined with jeans in a formal context.
To add the preppy and formal touch, we always mix and match our jeans with a tie. And when we go for the workwear jacket and jeans combination, we wear silk ties like THE VINTAGE to add the sophisticated touch. Last but not least, we usually mix the jeans with leather shoes like loafers or brogues.
THE DENIM JACKET
Wow, the denim jacket is such an icon in the menswear wardrobe. It has been around since the late 19th century. And even though the denim jacket has Western references, it’s easy to make a style move away from that traditional context of the jacket. We suggest to wear it with shirting, ties and tailored trousers.
Here, we have made our favorite styling combination when including a denim jacket to our look. Mixed with navy blue tailored trousers, an Oxford shirt, white sneakers and a knitted tie, you look FLY!
THE DENIM SHIRT
Many thinks it’s a no-go to wear denim shirts under blazers. It also means that many thinks it’s a bad combination to mix denim shirts with ties.
We don’t agree!
Wearing a denim shirt under a blazer is a bold and very cool style statement. But yes, many denim shirts are often to thick to use underneath a blazer. Luckily we have a suggestion, that you hopefully will love: You can find many denim look-a-like shirts in Chambray qualities. Wanna know more? Check our guide to shirts out here.
When we styled this look, we did it very bold. The seersucker blazer is a perfect summery contrast to the heavier denim shirt look. On the bottom we wear suit trousers and brown brogues. And to lighten it all a bit up, we styled the look with a grey knit tie.
