What inspires the founders of AN IVY? How will they describe their own personal style? And what is the vision of AN IVY as a brand? In a new series you can meet the two founders. We start by having a chat with Nikolaj Dylsing.
Name: Nikolaj Dylsing Olsen
Co-Founder, AN IVY
WHAT IS AN IVY TO YOU?
AN IVY is a lot more to me than just products. Of course the products are a huge part of it. And beautiful and well-made products make me sincerely happy. Despite this may sound superficial or materialistic to some. But AN IVY is a symbol of more. A symbol of making small moments big. We all have to dress, so why not do something with it? I really am a protester of going for the easy choice often. And why look like all the rest in t-shirts and jeans? I have never really understood this.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My inspiration various a lot. Often I am very much inspired by people who do things their own way. And have the guts to stand of for this. But currently I am really fascinated by art and architecture. It’s amazing to look at something, a painting or a building, being completely overwhelmed by how someone could think of this and then create it. The art is also a way for me to find inspiration on color combinations that surprises. Like a light blue paired with a pink. Or beige paired with green.
HOW WILL YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN STYLE?
I am a pretty classic guy. Though with a love for doing something just a bit different. Like wearing a hopsack suit instead of one in a classic wool quality. Loafers instead of derbies. A green tie instead of one in blue. I never want to be the loudest person in the room with my clothing. But I don’t want to look like ‘the many’ and I like the thought of me having and owning my own look. That is why I often wear the same things over and over again, just in different variations. A grey checked blazer, a pair of loafers, Oxford shirts, a navy double-breasted blazer and grey trousers.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ITEMS IN YOUR WARDROBE?
My favorite ‘pattern’ has been the checked Prince of Wales for a long time now. So cool and so timeless. That’s why I really love this blazer from Oscar Jacobson and it has been my best friend all winter long. And I can pretty much wear it to anything.
I also have this weakness for great perfumes. And like with clothing, I like to have something that is a signature to me. And that has been ‘Gypsy Water’ by Byredo. It’s not too heavy, but still complex. I think it has been my go-to perfume for almost 5 years now. And I can’t see that this will ever change.
Last, I really like great footwear. And especially loafers. Right now I wear these suede tassel loafers from Meermin a lot. Great quality for money and they have an amazing shape that fits my foot very well. Oh, and the rich brown color is so beautiful.

WHO OR WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
I love everything what Frederick Egan Castleberry (@fecastleberry) does. His way of owning his look is enviable. And he looks so cool in everything from a pinstriped suit to a tracksuit from Adidas. How he does this, I don’t know. But his eye for style, design and aesthetic and his way of communicating this is for me second-to-none.
It’s difficult to pinpoint just one. But with a gun to my face I would have to say ‘ambition’. I have always been incredible ambitious. And the tie have since my early 20s been a way of showing this to the world. I believe that a tie shows that you want to make small moments big. And no one should ever doubt the importance of dressing really well. It does make a difference. No doubt about that.
Additionally, a tie is also a really easy way to be well dressed. Having a great pair of trousers, a white (Oxford) shirt and a nice tie really goes a long way.
WHAT TIE IS YOUR FAVORITE?
I have always loved the knitted ties. They balance so nicely between formal and casual. They can be used to dress up your casual looks or to tone down your formal ones a bit. This is really something I fancy.
After we introduced our ‘Italian Collection’, I have been wearing this knitted silk versions a lot. The texture of these ties are amazing and the way it is knitted is called ‘uncinetto’. This technique is really special and can only be made by one manufacturer in Como, Italy if it has to be done in the original way. And of course, this was what we were looking for.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN COPENHAGEN?
There are no place that I have visited more than ‘108 the Corner’. The place has a unique charm and is situated right at the Copenhagen harbor. I am from a small Danish island called Bornholm, and having grown up close to the water this has some sort of a calming effect on me. And the cortado they serve is probably the best one in Copenhagen while their wine list is also magnificent if you arrive later at night and have had your cups of the day.
WHAT IS THE VISION OF AN IVY AND WHAT DO YOU DREAM THE BRAND BECOME?
Personally, I love brands that stand for something. And brands that have their own way of expressing this. This is also how I hope people look at AN IVY. And it is something we are trying to become better and better at all the time.
We have to be a brand that celebrates the importance of excelling in all aspects of life. We have to be relevant for men who want more. And we want to be a brand people can buy from knowing they are in good hands when it comes to great style. This way, our customers can use their resources on excelling in their very own fields of expertise. That is also why I dream about AN IVY becoming a concept where men who know the importance of dressing well can find their accessories. We want to become the go-to place of visionary men.
